Port Washington School District Interest Group Blog

This Blog is born from a group of 25 concerned fathers in the school system who got together Tuesday 12/9/2011. We got together to try and better understand how our school system works so that, maybe, we could help stop the unsustainable increase in taxes, combined with deepening cuts in our kids' educational programs.

After the meeting I received over 180 emails in 2 days in a frenzy of questions, ideas and initiatives so here we are with a blog. The short term goal is to educate each other so that we can identify the real issues facing our educational system, and to shed light on the things that are egregiously wasteful, or unreasonable, or just bad.

There is a Board of Education Meeting at Schreiber High school on Tuesday, 12/13/2011 at 8:00PM. All are encouraged to attend that meeting and to use this website as a tool for accumulating knowledge so that you can try to make a difference, or so that at least you can know what's going on if you so desire.

  1. Btw the reasons i am getting involved are below. Why aren't you getting involved?

    1) I attended last year's board meetings and it scared me; our great town is headed downhill fast. We arent really in control of our future, and we need to understand how to take it back if we want to. Not enough people know what is going on and frankly I would rather sit back and live life, but I felt if I dont do something now it will at some point be too late.

    2) I think taxes are too high AND that we can get better value for our money. Some people who advocate for bigger school budgets do not feel that way. If you think taxes are too high you need to express that opinion or else we look forward to higher taxes and less value.

    3) Costs are increasing at an UNSUSTAINABLE rate. School has started to cut real educational programs like the Library? The Board of Ed has no control over the true fat in the budget, and now has to cut the meat of our kids' education. I believe if we can get to the true fat, we will be able to have the surplus money we need again to fund great education.

    4) >$130mm/year to educate 6,000 kids sounds like it should be enough money, however, we find ourselves cutting the library? We live in a great community with a tremendous tax base. Lets figure out how to get better value for our money before it is too late.

    5) I got involved to get you involved.
